Djúpavík–Ófeigsfjörður-Djúpavík (return)–113 km.

Strandir …… It is probably the shortest of the six scenic days but it takes you to the most remote places inhabited in Iceland. Djúpavík used to be one of the busiest villages in Iceland, but only for a very short period. Located at the Reykjarjförður on the east coast of the West fjords, it was never an ideal site for a village or a town. in 1934. A Herring factory was built Then, in 1944 the herring stock started declining and vanished altogether in 1948. All the residents moved away, and the buildings were abandoned to rot. From Djúpavík we ride the steep coast line with spectacular senery all the way to the very end of a drive/ride able road in Ófeigsfjörður. From there,it́s only possible to walk the rest of this area. On this way we pass another abandoned herring factory that was built in 1942-1944 and closed down 1952. These abandoned factories are kind of art in a way.A perfect photographic senery with a blend of cracked concrete and rusty steel keeping lot of stories. On our return we take a bath in special pool „Krossneslaug wich is located in the rocky seashore. From the pool it ́s a return to Djúpavík where we spend the night.

Trip highlights:

  • Djúpavík town
  • Ófeigsfjörður
  • Ingólfsfjörður
  • Krossaneslaug,a werry nice pool located in th rocky seashore

Riding the coastline to Drangsnes. Drangsnes is a very special and beautiful located fisherman’s town where you can see a small Island„Grímsey“ just a reach out. From Drangsnes back to Hólmavík and then the old way to Borðeyri, wich is the smallest village in Iceland with only 13 inhabitants. Next Laxárdalsheiði to Bíldudalur where we tank.

Day 6, 321 km

Day 7

Stykkishólmur–Selfoss–245 km

Trip highlights:

  • Borgarnes town
  • Skorradalsvatn
  • Hvalfjörður,whale fjord
  • Þingvellir National Park

From Stykkishólmur we take the old montain road (kellingaskarð,which is not official anymore) to the south part of Snæfellsnes and then we ride so called “Mýrar” a long flat area to Borgarnes.Borgarnes is a very popular place to have a short stop (tanking/eating) when travelling between south and north Iceland on F1. From Borgarnes we ride to Skorradalsvatn (lake) and over Dragháls to Hvalfjörður which was a part of F1, but now there is a undersea tunnel passing the fjord. Hvalfjörður translates to,,Whale-fjord,,because it was a common place to see whales in the early days. It is very beautiful and fun to ride, with a lot of turns. In 1948 there was built a whale cutting factory. It was closed down in 1989 and opened again in 2009 and is still active to day. Then we ride along Kjósaskarðsvegur to Þingvellir National Park and back to Selfoss where we started.
